The Indian odyssey

Porfavor next time remember me not to get sick of a cold before having to travel for 24 hours with permanent air conditioned! And not to drink a complete bottle of water before having to grab a 4 hour taxi with a driver who understands and speaks 0% of English language; though fortunately he read minds, because in the middle of the way he told me “time to break”, in a very pronounced/strong Hindi accent.

It was then when I felt the ‘glory’!…Until I found out that, for my surprise,a ‘ladies toilet’ here in India pretty much means a hole in the floor (at least in that place it did!). I developed a new ‘skill’ now! Skill ‘PP07’(That was fast!).

But if you’re now thinking: “How challenging it is to go to the toilet in India!”… You should also try: “How challenging it is to find toilet paper!” or "how challenging is something as simple as crossing a street by foot".

I had to walk store by store with a piece of tissue in hand asking where could I buy ‘this kind of thing’. In the end a pharmacy was the key to the problem.
Then, in order to cross the street to the pharmacy and back again I had to wait like 20 minutes, so I wouldn’t become ‘smashed-Maria’, thanks to a motorcycle or a car.

To finish with this ‘odyssey’ of mine, on my way back to the hotel I ran into a big snake on the floor which, after I nearly had a heart attack, I figured out it was dead.

Yes, ladies and gentleman, I do not know yet if I am glad or not to inform you that I have reached my so “mysterious subcontinent of India”! One thing is for sure though: I have already reached it!

A completely different planet! Where I am a completely ‘un-identified object’ or something like that (judging by the look most of the people give me when walking on the streets!).

How would I describe the place?
I’ve been here for approx. 9 hours, so I really do not know much yet! However, I can say that I am actually surprised to see that the 2 cities that I sort of saw during these past hours (Mumbai and Pune) look like ‘semi-destroyed’ or ‘semi-built’ (I haven’t quite decided yet which of these two descriptions suits them best!).

At the moment to be honest I’m a bit lost. I do not know much. Fortunately, I just met my internship supervisor and the organization’s director to clear some doubts.
But, when it comes to my ‘sense of direction’ I just know that I am staying at a hotel, that I really don’t know exactly whereit is located, in relation to the center of this city or… … …whatever!

What I do know just right about now is that, at the moment, this is how I lock my door:

Haha, funny!

There is no wi-fi, so I am now at the reception’s computer posting this.
The room smells like those sprays you use to kill bugs (it is a strong smell… so hopefully I won’t wake up like a dead bug tomorrow!). And, you know… I wanted to open the window to ‘air’ the room a bit, but (after my ‘cardiac’ experience today) I’m a bit paranoid of becoming a snake’s dinner!

Haha, I think I’ll stop, otherwise I’ll scare you all!

It is not as bad as it sounds, promise. Plus, I’ve already managed to make some progress in accepting this country as my ‘habitat’ for the next 3 months and 1/2.

Lets just wait and see!

OK. It is time for me to LEAVE. I need a shower and some ZZzZzz… ‘cause I am a bit tired and tomorrow is the first day of “office”.

Tomorrow is the day we see India with ‘rested’ eyes.
[I didn't have battery in my camera, so I couldn't take pictures. Do that tomorrrrow!]

PEACE and NAMASTE!

Concentration cancellation: WUEC 2012

Hello again dear blog readers!

I would like to, first of all, start by apologizing for disconnecting and disappearing for such a long time. I am sorry about that, but I sort of had to do it.

The reason: (as ‘romantic’ as it may sound) lets say that a “dream came true”.
[Maybe you remember that by the end of the Horse 'overdose' week post I wrote some months ago, I told you that I would have the chance to compete in my first big/important championship].

Well, after spending a month and a half at home, doing horse-brainwash/intense training, this finally happened last week.

I had the opportunity to compete in the World University Equestrian Championship (WUEC) which took place in the city of Aachen, Germany; considered the ‘mecca of the equestrian world’ (which at the moment is still my current location for a few more hours).

I would have liked to show you a bit more of Guatemala when I was there… Unfortunately I didn’t have the chance, but I promise I will next time!

So, I have pretty good news concerning the WUEC (I really don’t know if you care… chances are that you probably don’t). I just can’t manage to stop thinking about it since it happened, so I have pretty much nothing else to write about!

One of the good news is that those days were definitely, until now, one of the best days of my life. I really enjoyed competing. I was in a position in which I didn’t want to lose, I didn’t want to win. I just simply didn’t want it to end.

The other good news is that I managed to pass to the showjumping semifinals, and got 5th place in the end.

It was my first time, as well as my country’s (Guatemala’s) first time to participate in such event.
[There were 26 competing countries, with 3 riders competing simultaneously as part of their national team as well as individually. It all summed up to 78 riders in total].
So of course, no one ever expected Guatemala making it to the semifinals; but we did!

It was all very special. Due to the fact that since I was a bit younger I used to watch the Grand Prix competitions in Aachen’s Soers stadium. It was until last year that I had the chance to go in person to watch a Grand Prix and believe it or not while standing there in the audience, I thought to myself: “Maybe one day I manage to compete in this place”.
Of course I never, ever, NEVER imagined it would be a year later. This year. Last week.

But things do happen. I learned that it's not so much about effort and working hard, but about just liking what you do. Then, everything works out.
Life is funny. It’s weird… I’m just happy :’)

But ok dear readers, I have to start switching topics; because as I remember, I made sort of a ‘plan’ when I started writing this blog (‘On yourmarks, get set, g… Blog!’).
And in this ‘plan’ I mentioned that we would start our 3rd school year by doing an internship in India and later on travelling to Sevilla for our semester abroad.

So now, GUESS WHAT???
Ladies and gentleman, it’s time to go to India. Yes!

The plane that departs to the ‘land of the tiger’, the ‘land of Buddha’, the ‘land of the jungle book’… to the MYSTERIOUS SUBCONTINENT OF INDIA leaves in about 7 hours.

So, we leave from Aachen to Dusseldorf; Dusseldorf to London; London to Mumbai and from Mumbai to our final destination: Pune!

Yes. A very long day and a half awaits! This time I will be 100% available for writing the blog. Promise, no more disappearing! It will be fun and different, I reckon.

I AM VERY NERVOUS. Yes sir! And no doubt, that for this 3 months and a 1/2 I will very much miss my four-legged friends..the horses. I’ll see if I can find myself an elephant instead (maybe a good idea for my curriculum's 'unique selling point')!

Ok readers, I will be writing when I find myself listening to Hindi rather than German!

PEACE,

Your rider/writer
